CLASS FULL
Beginner Drawing Class - Learn to draw realistic animals
Teacher: Sherrie Applegate from Quesnel, BC
In this course we will look at the use of geometrics to layout the drawing to ensure that the drawing elements are in the correct perspective and position, proportional to one another. This will enable the enlarging or shrinking of the photo representation in your drawing.
We will cover shading that will bring out the musculature of the animal and methods of creating the “coat” by using pencil strokes.
By the end of the class, the student should have a good grasp of the fundamentals of pencil drawing with an animal as a subject. The student should have a finished (or close to finished) product to take home.
If time permits, we will look at adding backgrounds to the drawings. CLASS FULL
Drum making
Learn to make a Traditional North Coast Drum.
Teacher: Jason Titian, a Nuu-chah-nulth artist of the Uchucklesaht Nation, was born in 1974 in Port Alberni to Marie Rush Samuel, also of Uchucklesaht and the late Ralph Titian Sr from Ahousaht.
Titian showed an interest in First Nations Art at a young age, with one of his first memories of art instruction being with Ron Hamilton, a world renowned Ethnologist and internationally known Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist of Hupacasath First Nation.
In 2001 Titian approached Tsimshian/Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist Ray Sim Sr. and asked him for instruction. Sim taught Titian the principles of form-line which is the primary design element of Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth art. Sim, who was trained in Kitanmaax North West Coast School of arts in K'san, continues to be Titians teacher and mentor.
In 2006 Titian carved alongside fellow Nuu-chah-nulth artist Moy Sutherland Jr, who apprenticed with the late Art Thompson of Dididaht (Whyac at Nitinaht Lake). Sutherland encouraged Titian to expand his knowledge of his ancestral art.
Titian is part of the younger generation of Nuu-chah-nulth artists following the footsteps of their respected predecessors, such as Tim Paul, Joe David and Patrick Amos.
The traditional values of his native heritage were an important part of Titians' up-bringing and his culture remains central to his lifestyle. He has expanded and developed his creativity into theatrical performances that demonstrate his passion for art, culture, tradition and spiritual growth
Titians artwork visually illustrates the mentoring and grooming by the master artists he has learned from, predominantly Ron Hamilton and Ray Sim.

Workshop #2 Description:
Lino Prints
The printmaker is the so called “engineer” of the arts, dealing as they do with many processes, tools and heavy presses. Mary enjoys that idea and also the concept of connection to the printed word and the fast, cheap dissemination of vital information to all tiers of society. It is an art designed to stir cognition, illustrate a message of importance, and be a voice for the poor and marginalized.

Mary enjoys that idea and also the concept of connection to the printed word and the fast, cheap dissemination of vital information to all tiers of society. It is an art designed to stir cognition, illustrate a message of importance, and be a voice for the poor and marginalized.
Mary was born in England and attended the Letchworth Grammar School just north of London. She was always fascinated by sketching, scrapbooks, journals and art. As a child she was immersed in literature that was filled with block prints, etchings, and a variety of hand printed illustrations.
Mary went on to study Studio Art and Education at Whitelands College in London and worked as a primary teacher before emigrating to Canada with her husband in 1968. She worked in education in Saskatchewan, Langley, Sooke, Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek, BC, taking time off to have four daughters. Mary completed her degree at the University of Victoria and went on to teach Special Education in School District #59. She studied at Vancouver School of Theology and became an Anglican priest.
After retirement in 2008 Mary began to focus on her love for art-making. She went to Northern Lights College and studied with Laine Dahlen and Jennifer Bowes for several years discovering a passion and interest in printmaking. She continues to study at the Ground Zero Print Studio in Victoria BC, under the mentorship of Victoria Edgarr and Alain Costaz, both master printmakers. Mary joined the Flying Colours Artists’ Association in Fort St John and The Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver, both being instrumental in her growth, encouragement, and development as an artist.
Mary has combined her love of art with her enjoyment of people and teaching. She has a passion to foster the development of printmaking in the Peace Region and teaches regularly in Grande Prairie, Peace River, Ft.St.John and Dawson Creek. She also enjoys learning more about printmaking and has been to workshops in Santa Fe, US, and Cambridge, UK, to further her skill. She organizes art workshops for two local art groups and has hosted many regular printmaking events with some renowned print artists. Mary has won several juried art shows regionally and two national shows in Vancouver. She was juried into a Spanish mini-print show recently that will exhibit in Spain, England, and France, and she plans to enter international shows in England and Japan in the near future.

Workshop #3
Brandon Broderick

Photography
Workshop #3 Description:
Since I do nature photography, that will be the overall theme of the workshops. The Theme for Creative Jam will be revealed Fiday night.
I’d like to do a couple photo walks if possible, as well as long exposure, wildlife photography, and photo editing workshops. For the editing part I’ll be screen sharing and going over my entire process from RAW to final using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Because of this, I think having participants with a DSLR and some prior knowledge would be the best fit. I’ll still cover lots of the basics throughout, but will also go into some more advanced stuff for people that want to get the most out of their camera. I want to get people to stop shooting in auto mode!
For the photo walks please dress for the weather. It would be really cool to do a night photography in the field workshop, but that would be very weather dependant and if enough interest.
Student Supplies:
Participants will need a DSLR with at least one lens, preferably a wide angle and a telephoto. A tripod would also be helpful but that’s up to the style of photography the participant is after. If the night photography one happens, a tripod would be essential. They should also have proper rain gear and an umbrella (for keeping the camera dry).

Knitting - Sylvia Olsen
This three-day intensive workshop, explores knitting techniques Sylvia calls Salish Fusion—inspired by Coast Salish knitters and fused with her own favourite knitting methods. While the class knits together participants will learn the colourwork method made popular by the Cowichan sweater and Sylvia will demonstrate seams without sewing, knitting on collars, installing zippers, and inserting pockets after the fact. The kit for the class (purchased separately) includes a pattern (child or adult) for a vest and yarn from Custom Woolen Mills. The kit will be mailed to participants beforehand and will need to be worked up to the first colourwork band so everyone is ready to start together. Sylvia is a knitting story-teller so be ready for an enriching three days of fusion and fun.
Sylvia Olsen is a woolworker, storyteller, writer, historian… She learned to knit the first time from her British aunt using spikey needles and tread-like yarn. The second time she learned from Coast Salish knitters making bulky hand-spun and heavy west coast sweaters. Sylvia calls her designs and knitting techniques Salish Fusion—simply what emerged from the influences in her life and her passion for working with her hands. Sylvia teaches an intuitive style knitting (if that’s not a contradiction) and is interested in the stories that make knitting such a wonderful part of our lives.

Creative editing tips (do-able on most photo editing programs) were included for those interested.

Visual Artist - Joan Mostad
Joan describes her approach to painting by saying, “How we perceive light, dark, and shadow is what we really are looking at and actually seeing. It is how we recognize shape, perspective, atmosphere, mood, and the very essence everything around us. As a visual artist, it is this “value” of light that is the core and foundation for each piece I do. Once I have that figured out, then I think about colour. ”
Joan is local artist who has diligently practiced and refined her craft for many years. She works and teaches here in Prince Rupert at her downtown studio on 3rd Avenue. Her preferred medium is oil, but she also creates with watercolour, acrylics, pastel, graphite, encaustic, etching, photography, and their combination for mixed medium pieces.
Joan has received several awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists, the BC Juried Art Show, Terrace Art Gallery, Easel Weasel Art Guild and has had several pieces purchased for the collection of the Museum of Northern BC and for the Ridley Island Terminal Art Initiative.
