The limitations of smartphone filmmaking pose unique and fun challenges, allowing for more creativity within the medium. The workshop will include various activities and exercises that foster storytelling and teach technical knowledge required of each role in the film industry. The theme of the workshop is community and home.
This program is geared toward youth ages 14-21 who want to explore film, visual storytelling and who are possibly interested in pursuing a career in the film industry.
May 27, Saturday, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 4 pm.
May 28, Sunday, 9:30 am to 4 pm.
Location: The library at Coast Mountain College
This two-day workshop engages youth in filmmaking and storytelling by creating a smartphone short film together from start to finish. Youth will write, organize and shoot the film as an ensemble, learning basic filmmaking skills. Together they will explore and have the opportunity to take on roles in writing, acting, directing, cinematography, lighting, production design and sound. The workshop emphasizes the production phase of filmmaking with an overview of post-production for any interested youth.
The theme of the workshop is community and home. Youth are encouraged to bring their own ideas of community to the workshop, or brainstorm together to create the film! The workshop will mostly take place indoors, with some outdoor excursions to engage youth in community and for teaching practical skills about elements of film such as lighting.
The participants will be sent their finished smartphone film a week after the workshop to show their family and friends!
THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE BUT YOU MUST REGISTER!

Shian Grace is a writer, director and actor based in Toronto. Since graduating from York University for Film: Media Arts (2021), Shian has worked on numerous film and music video projects. In 2021 Shian's film "Hikers" was selected and commissioned by TIFF for the Battle of the Scores competition. Shian was chosen to participate in Workman Arts' If You Ask Me film residency in 2022., where she wrote and directed "Stuckness", an autobiographical fiction film which premiered at the Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival. Her short film, "Scion" was also selected to play at "Open Screen", a curated screening at TIFF co-hosted by POV and Future of Film Showcase. Passionate about education and film, Shian has also taught Media Arts, New Media project creation and Drama classes to youth through The City of Toronto and with the Regent Park Focus.
As an Art Director, Shian has worked on "True Dating Stories Season 3" (CBC, 2022) with Production Designer, Justin Campbell. She also worked on Mary Galloway's short film "Better at Texting" (CFC, 2022) and as an Art Director for "Namaste Nightmares" (Neshama Entertainment / Hallmark, 2023).
Shian has had the opportunity to act in projects such as "Left For Dead" (Gloria Kim, Lifetime, 2021) and "Me Too" (Maya Bastian, Art With Impact, 2019), learning from incredible Canadian female directors. Her passion for storytelling transcends across the various roles she has explored as a filmmaker. Shian is finishing her first science fiction film called "For Trinity" (supported by Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council).
Shian is currently writing her first feature film about Chinese Canadians who served during World War II in Vancouver, and is visiting Prince Rupert to learn about Chinese Canadians who lived here during war, and how the community has changed over time. She received a Canada Council of the Arts grant to do research for her first narrative fiction film. The story is loosely based on the life of Peggy Lee, a Chinese-Canadian veteran who served on the homefront in WWII, and grew up in Prince Rupert. Shian is interested in stories about the railway and immigration, and is excited to get to know more about our community. While the workshop teaches the fundamentals of filmmaking and storytelling, it also focuses on community and home.
